The Benefits of Having a Positive Attitude for Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is where people handle the aging process by keeping a positive, engaged outlook on life. Why some people handle this transition of life better may be because of their attitude toward it.

Introduction to Positive Attitude for Healthy Aging

Recent research has shown that people with positive attitudes about getting older will often live longer and healthier lives than those with negative attitudes. This study involved 14,000 adults over the age of 50. Those with the highest satisfaction had a 43% lower risk of dying from any type of cause over a four-year period versus those who had the lowest satisfaction.

How Positive Attitude Can Be Beneficial For Aging Well

A positive attitude was shown to be beneficial for aging well because it helped cut down on the percentage of dying from such conditions as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes by as much as 43%. Those seniors also showed better cognitive functioning, were likelier to engage in physical activities and sleep better, had a greater sense of purpose and optimism about life, and were less likely to be depressed or feel lonely. Thus, there is a connection between having a specific type of mindset and practicing specific health behaviors.

Ways to Have a More Positive Attitude

There are several ways for seniors to have a more positive attitude so they engage in more positive health behaviors.

  1. Maintain Physical Activity: Staying physically active can help your loved one keep positive self-esteem and a daily routine.
  1. Reduce Your Stress: Your loved one will be able to smile more and think more positively by reducing the amount of stress in their lives. Try to aid them in any difficult tasks that could cause them to feel stress or worry.
  1. Engage in Purposeful Activities: It is important for your loved one to find activities and projects that align with their values. This will also help them to maintain good self-esteem and keep a regular schedule in their lives.
  1. Maintain Brain Activity: To keep a positive mindset, it is important your loved one challenges their mental ability. Have them try new activities, teach skills to others, and engage in activities such as puzzles, crossword puzzles, and games that challenge them to critically think.
  1. Be Socially Engaged: Your loved one should remain socially active by joining a community organization or club that aligns with their values and inspires them to positively contribute to its success.
